Joshua Reads to Everyone

Read the Story

God told Joshua not to be afraid. He told him to go up to Ai. God said He had given it to him. This time Israel obeyed God's plan, and God gave them the city.

Then Joshua built an altar to God on Mount Ebal. It was made of stones. No one had cut them with iron.

Joshua wrote God's law on the stones. Then he read all of it to the people. The women heard it. The little ones heard it. People from other lands heard it too.

Memory Verse

“There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua didn’t read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.”

Every Word for Every Person

Read the Story

Yahweh said to Joshua, Don't be afraid, and don't be dismayed. He told Joshua to go up to Ai. God gave Joshua a plan. Some men hid behind the city in an ambush.

When the men of Ai chased Israel away from the city, the city was left open. Yahweh told Joshua to stretch out the javelin in his hand toward Ai. The men in hiding rose up and took the city. God gave Israel the victory.

Then Joshua built an altar of uncut stones to Yahweh on Mount Ebal. He wrote a copy of Moses' law on stones. Half the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half in front of Mount Ebal. Joshua read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse. Not one word was left out.

Memory Verse

“There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua didn’t read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.”

Joshua 8 · Grade 4

Starting Again With God

Name Date

Read and Think

After Achan's sin was dealt with, Yahweh spoke words of comfort: Don't be afraid, and don't be dismayed. This time Israel followed God's plan. Joshua set an ambush behind Ai. Then he led the main army toward the city and drew its men out.

Yahweh told Joshua to stretch out his javelin toward Ai. The ambush rose and entered the city. Joshua kept the javelin stretched out until the battle was over, much as Moses had held up his hands. Ai was defeated as God's judgment, and this time Israel was allowed to keep the livestock and the plunder.

Then Joshua obeyed what Moses had commanded long before. He built an altar of uncut stones on Mount Ebal. He wrote a copy of Moses' law on the stones. Then he read every word of it, the blessing and the curse. There was not a word which Joshua didn't read before all the assembly, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners among them.

Show What You Know

  1. What words of comfort did Yahweh speak after Achan's sin?

  2. How long did Joshua keep the javelin stretched out?

  3. What was Israel allowed to keep this time?

  4. Who heard the law read besides the men?

Think About It

  1. God gave Israel a fresh start after failure. How does God give you fresh starts?

  2. Who heard Joshua read the law?

Memory Verse

“There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua didn’t read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.”

Joshua 8 · Grade 5

Covenant Renewed in the Land

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 8 shows restoration after Achan's sin. Yahweh opens with Don't be afraid, and don't be dismayed, the same assurance given to Joshua at the start. Now Israel fights God's way. Joshua posts an ambush between Bethel and Ai, draws the men of Ai out by pretending to flee, and leaves the city open.

Yahweh says, Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand. The outstretched javelin, held until the end, may remind readers of Moses' raised hands in the battle with Amalek. Ai is defeated as God's judgment. Unlike at Jericho, God now permits Israel to take the livestock and plunder, but at Jericho Achan had taken what God said not to take.

The chapter ends not with a battle but with worship. On Mount Ebal, Joshua builds an altar of uncut stones, as written in the book of the law of Moses. He writes a copy of the law on stones and reads all of it, the blessing and the curse, with half the people before Mount Gerizim and half before Mount Ebal. There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua didn't read before all the assembly. The covenant belongs to everyone, from leaders to little ones to foreigners.

Show What You Know

  1. What assurance does Yahweh repeat at the start of the chapter?

  2. Where did Joshua post the ambush?

  3. What did Joshua keep holding out until Ai was defeated?

  4. What did God let Israel take at Ai?

  5. Where were the two halves of the people standing?
