The Commander of Yahweh's Army

Name Date

Read the Story

The kings of the land heard that Yahweh had dried up the Jordan, and their hearts melted. At Gilgal, Yahweh said, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. The name Gilgal is linked to that rolling away.

On the fourteenth day of the month Israel kept the Passover in the plains of Jericho. The next day they ate food grown in the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. Then the manna ceased. They ate the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

Near Jericho Joshua saw a man with his sword drawn. Joshua asked if he was for Israel or for their enemies. He said, No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh's army. Joshua fell on his face and worshiped. He was told to take off his sandals, for the place was holy.

Memory Verse

He said, “No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh’s army.” Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshiped, and asked him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

Joshua 5 · Grade 4

Getting Ready to Follow

Name Date

Read and Think

Before any battle, God prepared His people's hearts. The new generation born in the wilderness had not received the covenant sign God gave Abraham, so at Gilgal Joshua renewed it. Yahweh said, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.

Israel then kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. The day after, they ate produce of the land, and the manna ceased. For forty years God had fed them in the wilderness, and now He fed them in a new way through the land He had promised.

Near Jericho, Joshua met a man with a drawn sword and asked, Are you for us, or for our enemies? The answer was No; this was the commander of Yahweh's army. Joshua's real question was not whether God was on his side, but whether he was on God's side. Joshua worshiped and took off his sandals, for the place was holy.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Joshua renew the covenant sign at Gilgal?

  2. How long had God fed Israel with manna?

  3. What did Joshua ask the man with the drawn sword?

  4. What was Joshua's real question about?

Joshua 5 · Grade 5

Worship Before Warfare

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 5 delays the conquest to deal with the people's hearts. The kings of the Amorites and Canaanites heard that Yahweh dried up the Jordan, and their hearts melted. Israel was camped in enemy land, yet God first called them to covenant renewal. The generation that left Egypt had died in the wilderness, and their children had not received the covenant sign given to Abraham. At Gilgal it was renewed, and God said, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.

The Passover followed on the fourteenth day of the month, forty years after the first one in Egypt. The next day Israel ate unleavened cakes and parched grain from the land, and the manna ceased. God's provision changed form, but His faithfulness did not.

Then Joshua met a man with his sword drawn. Joshua asked, Are you for us, or for our enemies? He answered, No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh's army. Joshua fell on his face, worshiped, and asked, What does my lord say to his servant? The command echoed Moses at the burning bush: Take off your sandals, for the place on which you stand is holy. The battle for Jericho belongs to Yahweh.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Yahweh say at Gilgal?

  2. How did God's provision change after the Passover?

  3. What did the commander answer when Joshua asked whose side he was on?

  4. What did Joshua ask after he worshiped?

  5. Which earlier event does the command about sandals echo?
