Joshua 5 · Grade 3
The Commander of Yahweh's Army
Read the Story
The kings of the land heard that Yahweh had dried up the Jordan, and their hearts melted. At Gilgal, Yahweh said, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. The name Gilgal is linked to that rolling away.
On the fourteenth day of the month Israel kept the Passover in the plains of Jericho. The next day they ate food grown in the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. Then the manna ceased. They ate the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
Near Jericho Joshua saw a man with his sword drawn. Joshua asked if he was for Israel or for their enemies. He said, No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh's army. Joshua fell on his face and worshiped. He was told to take off his sandals, for the place was holy.
Memory Verse
“He said, “No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh’s army.” Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshiped, and asked him, “What does my lord say to his servant?””
