Joshua 4 · Grade 3

A Memorial for the Children

Name Date

Read the Story

The whole nation crossed the Jordan. Then Yahweh told Joshua to choose twelve men, one from every tribe. Each man carried a stone on his shoulder. It came from the place where the priests' feet stood. Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan.

Then the priests carried the ark up out of the river. The waters of the Jordan came back and flowed over all its banks as before. On that day Yahweh magnified Joshua, and the people feared him as they had feared Moses.

They camped at Gilgal, and Joshua set up the twelve stones there. He said that one day children would ask what the stones mean. Then they should say, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. God dried up the Jordan as He dried up the Red Sea.

Memory Verse

“Then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.”

Joshua 4 · Grade 4

Telling the Next Generation

Name Date

Read and Think

Once the whole nation had crossed, Yahweh gave a command. Twelve men, one per tribe, were to take stones from the place where the priests' feet stood firm. They carried them to the camp. Joshua set up twelve more stones in the middle of the Jordan, which the book says are there to this day.

Only after everyone had crossed did the priests carry the ark up. As soon as their feet touched dry land, the Jordan returned and flowed over its banks. About forty thousand armed men from the eastern tribes had crossed ahead of the people, as they had promised.

At Gilgal, Joshua explained the memorial. Children will ask what these stones mean. Then parents should tell them how Israel crossed on dry land. The purpose reached beyond Israel: that all the peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh's hand is mighty, and that you may fear Yahweh your God forever.

A Monument That Preaches

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 4 slows the story down to make sure Israel never forgets the crossing. Twelve men, one per tribe, lift stones from the very spot where the priests stood firm in the riverbed. All twelve tribes share in the memorial, so the miracle belongs to the whole nation, including the tribes settling east of the Jordan.

The order of events matters. The priests carrying the ark stay in the riverbed until everything Yahweh commanded is finished. Only when they step out and their feet touch dry land do the waters return. The text notes that this happened on the tenth day of the first month, the very day the Passover lamb was to be chosen, linking this new beginning to the exodus.

At Gilgal the stones become a teaching tool. When your children ask, parents must answer with the story: Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. Joshua ties the Jordan to the Red Sea, and gives two purposes: that all the peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh's hand is mighty, and that you may fear Yahweh your God forever. God's acts are meant to be retold until faith passes to the next generation.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did all twelve tribes share in the memorial?

  2. When did the waters return?

  3. On what day did they come up out of the Jordan?

  4. What two purposes does Joshua give for the stones?
