A Path in the River

The people came to the Jordan River. The river was very full. It was harvest time.

Joshua told the people to get ready. He said God would do wonders the next day. The priests took the ark. They walked in front of the people.

The priests put their feet in the water. The water stopped! It stood up in a heap far away. The priests stood on dry ground in the river. All the people crossed on dry ground.

Memory Verse

“The priests who bore the ark of Yahweh’s covenant stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the nation had passed completely over the Jordan.”

Wonders at the Jordan

Name Date

Read the Story

Israel camped by the Jordan for three days. Then the officers told the people to follow the ark. They were to stay about two thousand cubits behind it. That way they would know the way to go.

Joshua said, Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow Yahweh will do wonders among you. God said He would make Joshua great that day.

The Jordan was over its banks at harvest. But the priests' feet dipped in the edge of the water. Then the water from upstream stood in one heap far away. The priests stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan. They stayed until the whole nation had crossed.

Joshua 3 · Grade 4

The Living God Goes Ahead

Name Date

Read and Think

After three days, the officers told the people to follow the ark of the covenant. They were to stay about two thousand cubits back. The ark showed that God Himself was leading. You have not passed this way before, the officers said, so the people needed to follow.

Joshua told the people to sanctify themselves, because tomorrow Yahweh would do wonders. The miracle would prove that the living God was among them. God also said He would make Joshua great. Then all Israel would know God was with him as with Moses.

It was harvest, and the Jordan overflowed its banks. The priests stepped into the edge of the water. Then the waters upstream rose up in one heap at Adam, the city beside Zarethan. The priests stood on dry ground until all Israel had crossed. In the New Testament, God's people passing through water as on dry land is remembered as an act of faith (Hebrews 11:29).

Joshua 3 · Grade 5

Stepping Into the River

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 3 echoes the Red Sea crossing a generation earlier. The ark of the covenant, the sign of God's throne among His people, leads the way. The officers tell the people to keep about two thousand cubits between themselves and the ark, so they may know the way they must go, for you have not passed this way before.

Joshua calls the people to sanctify themselves; for tomorrow Yahweh will do wonders among you. The crossing has a purpose: by this you shall know that the living God is among you, Joshua says. It also confirms Joshua's leadership, because God promises to magnify him in the sight of all Israel as He was with Moses.

The timing makes the miracle clearer. The Jordan overflows all its banks during harvest. The waters do not part until the feet of the priests dip into the edge of the water. Then the water stands in one heap far upstream at Adam, and the priests stand firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan until all the nation has passed over. In the New Testament, the earlier sea crossing is held up as faith: By faith they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land (Hebrews 11:29).

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the people need to follow the ark?

  2. By what would the people know the living God was among them?

  3. Why does the harvest timing make the miracle clearer?

  4. When did the waters stop?

  5. Which New Testament verse says by faith they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land?
