Joshua 24 · Grade 5
The Covenant at Shechem
Read and Think
At Shechem, Joshua said to all the people, Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, Your fathers lived of old time beyond the River. They served other gods. Then God told of His grace: I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you didn't build.
Joshua then called for a decision. Now therefore fear Yahweh, and serve him in sincerity and in truth. Choose today whom you will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve Yahweh. Joshua tested them: You can't serve Yahweh, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. The people said to Joshua, No, but we will serve Yahweh.
Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and set up a great stone under the oak by the sanctuary of Yahweh, saying it shall be a witness. Joshua died, being one hundred ten years old, and Israel served Yahweh all the days of Joshua. In the New Testament, Jesus says, No one can serve two masters (Matthew 6:24).
