All Came to Pass

Name Date

Read the Story

The heads of the Levites came to Eleazar and Joshua at Shiloh. They said, Yahweh commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their pasture lands for our livestock.

The children of Israel obeyed. They gave the Levites cities out of their own inheritance. The cities were chosen by lot. In all there were forty-eight cities with their pasture lands.

Then the chapter tells the big story. Yahweh gave to Israel all the land which he swore to give to their fathers. He gave them rest all around. Nothing failed of any good thing which Yahweh had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.

God's Faithfulness Summed Up

Name Date

Read and Think

The tribe of Levi received no single territory. Instead the Levites reminded the leaders at Shiloh that Yahweh had commanded through Moses to give them cities to dwell in, with their pasture lands for their livestock. The tribes obeyed and gave cities out of their own inheritance, according to the commandment of Yahweh.

The cities were assigned by lot to the families of Kohath, Gershon, and Merari, and they were spread through all the tribes. In all there were forty-eight cities with their pasture lands. The Levites who served God now lived among every tribe.

The chapter then sums up the whole conquest. So Yahweh gave to Israel all the land which he swore to give to their fathers. Yahweh gave them rest all around. Nothing failed of any good thing which Yahweh had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.

Joshua 21 · Grade 5

Nothing Failed

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 21 begins with the Levites. They came to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the tribes at Shiloh, saying, Yahweh commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their pasture lands for our livestock. The children of Israel gave to the Levites out of their inheritance, according to the commandment of Yahweh.

The lots went to the families of Kohath, Gershon, and Merari. The sons of Aaron the priest received cities in Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. All the cities of the Levites among the possessions of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their pasture lands. So the Levites who served Yahweh lived among all Israel.

The chapter closes with one of the great summaries in Scripture. So Yahweh gave to Israel all the land which he swore to give to their fathers. They possessed it, and lived in it. Yahweh gave them rest all around. Nothing failed of any good thing which Yahweh had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass. In the New Testament, Paul writes, For however many are the promises of God, in him is the Yes (2 Corinthians 1:20).
