Six Safe Cities

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Joshua to choose some special cities. They were cities of refuge. Refuge means a safe place.

Sometimes a person hurt someone by accident, not on purpose. That person could run to one of these cities. He stood at the city gate and told the leaders what happened.

The leaders let him in. He could live there safely. There were six cities. Three were on each side of the Jordan River.

Memory Verse

“He shall flee to one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his case in the ears of the elders of that city. They shall take him into the city with them, and give him a place, that he may live among them.”

Cities of Refuge

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh told Joshua to assign the cities of refuge that He spoke of by Moses. These were for a person who hurt someone by accident, not on purpose. Such a person could flee there and be safe from the avenger of blood.

He would stand at the entrance of the city gate. He would tell his case to the elders. They would take him into the city and give him a place to live.

Israel set apart six cities. Kedesh, Shechem, and Hebron were west of the Jordan. Bezer, Ramoth, and Golan were east of it. The cities were for Israel and also for the alien who lived among them.

Memory Verse

“He shall flee to one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his case in the ears of the elders of that city. They shall take him into the city with them, and give him a place, that he may live among them.”

A Place to Run

Name Date

Read and Think

With the land divided, Yahweh reminded Joshua to assign the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you by Moses. A man slayer who kills any person accidentally or unintentionally could flee there. They shall be to you for a refuge from the avenger of blood.

The one who fled would stand at the entrance of the gate and declare his case to the elders. They would take him in and give him a place to live. He would stay until he stood before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest. Then he could return home.

Six cities were chosen: Kedesh, Shechem, and Hebron west of the Jordan, and Bezer, Ramoth in Gilead, and Golan east of it. God's law joined justice and mercy, and the cities were open to the alien who lived among Israel too.

Refuge and Hope

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 20 puts into practice a law given through Moses. Yahweh said, Assign the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you by Moses, that the man slayer who kills any person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there. They shall be to you for a refuge from the avenger of blood. So God gave protection to those who had not meant to kill.

The process was careful. The one who fled would stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his case in the ears of the elders. They would take him in and give him a place to live. He would dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest. After that he could return to his own city and his own house.

Israel set apart six cities, three on each side of the Jordan: Kedesh in Galilee, Shechem, and Hebron in the west, and Bezer, Ramoth in Gilead, and Golan in Bashan in the east. They were for all the children of Israel, and for the alien who lives among them. In the New Testament, believers are described as those who have fled for refuge to take hold of the hope set before us (Hebrews 6:18).
