Rahab's Faith

Name Date

Read the Story

Joshua secretly sent two spies to view the land, including Jericho. They came to the house of a woman named Rahab. Her house was built on the city wall.

The king of Jericho heard about the spies and sent men to Rahab. She had already hidden the spies under stalks of flax on her roof. Rahab told the spies that the people of Jericho had heard how Yahweh dried up the Red Sea. Their hearts melted. She said Yahweh your God is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

Rahab asked the spies to save her father, mother, brothers, and sisters. The men promised. She let them down by a cord through the window. They told her to tie a line of scarlet thread in the window and keep her family inside. After three days in the mountains, the spies went back to Joshua.

Memory Verse

“As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.”

Joshua 2 · Grade 4

A Canaanite Who Believed

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua sent two spies from Shittim to view Jericho. They lodged with Rahab, a Canaanite woman who lived in a house on the city wall. When the king demanded that she bring the men out, she hid them on her roof under stalks of flax and sent the king's men away toward the Jordan.

Rahab then told the spies what she knew. Jericho had heard how Yahweh dried up the Red Sea and how Israel defeated Sihon and Og. Their hearts melted. Rahab confessed, Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath. Her fear became faith in Israel's God.

She asked for a true sign that her family would live. The spies pledged their lives for hers. She let them down by a cord and tied the scarlet line in the window. In the New Testament, Rahab is named among those who acted by faith and did not perish with the disobedient (Hebrews 11:31).

  2. What two victories had Jericho heard about?

Joshua 2 · Grade 5

Faith From an Unexpected Place

Name Date

Read and Think

Before crossing the Jordan, Joshua secretly sends two spies to view the land, including Jericho. They enter the house of Rahab, a Canaanite woman whose house is on the city wall. The king learns of it and orders her to bring the men out, but she has hidden them under stalks of flax on her roof and sends the searchers off toward the fords of the Jordan.

On the roof Rahab gives one of the clearest statements of faith in the book. She knows Yahweh has given Israel the land. Jericho has heard of the Red Sea and of Sihon and Og, and their hearts melted. Then she confesses, Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath. A woman from the nation under judgment recognizes the true God before Israel even crosses the river.

Rahab asks the spies to deal kindly with her father's house, and they swear by their own lives. She lets them down by a cord through the window. The sign is a line of scarlet thread, and everyone inside the house will be safe. In the New Testament, Rahab appears in the family line of Jesus: Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab (Matthew 1:5).

Show What You Know

  1. Where does the king of Jericho's search party go?

  2. Why is Rahab's confession surprising?

  3. What do the spies swear by?
