Joshua 2 · Grade 5
Faith From an Unexpected Place
Read and Think
Before crossing the Jordan, Joshua secretly sends two spies to view the land, including Jericho. They enter the house of Rahab, a Canaanite woman whose house is on the city wall. The king learns of it and orders her to bring the men out, but she has hidden them under stalks of flax on her roof and sends the searchers off toward the fords of the Jordan.
On the roof Rahab gives one of the clearest statements of faith in the book. She knows Yahweh has given Israel the land. Jericho has heard of the Red Sea and of Sihon and Og, and their hearts melted. Then she confesses, Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath. A woman from the nation under judgment recognizes the true God before Israel even crosses the river.
Rahab asks the spies to deal kindly with her father's house, and they swear by their own lives. She lets them down by a cord through the window. The sign is a line of scarlet thread, and everyone inside the house will be safe. In the New Testament, Rahab appears in the family line of Jesus: Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab (Matthew 1:5).
