Joshua 19 · Grade 5

Serving Before Receiving

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 19 completes the division of the land with six lots: Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan. Simeon's inheritance was carved out of Judah's, since the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them. Dan's border went out beyond them, for the children of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, took it, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their forefather.

Then comes a quiet detail: So they finished distributing the land for inheritance by its borders. The children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them. According to Yahweh's commandment, they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnathserah in the hill country of Ephraim. Joshua, who led every battle, received his land last.

The chapter ends as it began, with God at the center. The land was distributed by lot in Shiloh before Yahweh, at the door of the Tent of Meeting. In the New Testament, Jesus says, whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant (Matthew 20:26). Joshua's example points to that same humble greatness.
