No More Delay

Read and Think

Joshua 18 opens with worship at the center: The whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled themselves together at Shiloh, and set up the Tent of Meeting there. The land was subdued before them. God's dwelling now stood in the promised land, and the rest of the division would happen in His presence.

Still, seven tribes had not received their inheritance. Joshua asked a pointed question: How long will you neglect to go in to possess the land, which Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has given you? The problem was not God's slowness but the people's delay. Joshua's answer was practical: three men from each tribe would walk through the land, describe it, and return.

The men surveyed it by cities into seven portions in a book and returned to Shiloh. Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before Yahweh. The lots were cast before Yahweh, so the portions were given in His presence. Benjamin's lot came first, lying between Judah and Joseph, and included Jericho, Bethel, Gibeon, and Jebus, which is Jerusalem.
