A Promise Remembered

Name Date

Read and Think

Manasseh's lot came next, and with it a story of faith. Zelophehad had died with no sons, only five daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Years earlier Yahweh had told Moses that these daughters should receive their father's inheritance.

The daughters came to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua, and to the princes. They reminded them of what Yahweh commanded Moses, and they received land among the brothers of their father. They held on to God's word and spoke up for it.

Manasseh could not drive out the people of some cities. When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor instead. The children of Joseph also complained about having one lot. Joshua answered that a numerous people should go up, clear the forest, and trust God to help them drive out the Canaanites, though they had chariots of iron.

  1. How many daughters did Zelophehad have?

  2. What had Yahweh told Moses about these daughters?

  3. What did Israel do with the Canaanites when they grew strong?

Think About It

  1. The daughters remembered God's promise and spoke up. How can you hold on to God's promises?

  2. Joshua told the large tribe to work hard and trust God. Why does God sometimes ask us to work for what He gives?

Memory Verse

“They came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the princes, saying, “Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore according to the commandment of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.”

Joshua 17 · Grade 5

Faith That Claims a Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 17 records Manasseh's inheritance, including a remarkable scene. Zelophehad of Manasseh had no sons, but daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Back in the wilderness, Yahweh had ruled that daughters in such a family should inherit. Now the daughters came to claim what God had promised.

They came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the princes, saying, Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers. Joshua obeyed, and according to the commandment of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. God's word protected these women, and their faith claimed it.

The chapter also records failure and complaint. Manasseh couldn't drive out the inhabitants of some cities, and when Israel grew strong they used the Canaanites for forced labor. The house of Joseph protested to Joshua that they had only one lot though Yahweh had blessed them. Joshua turned their complaint back on them: If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest, and clear land for yourself there. He added, you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.

Show What You Know

  1. What had Yahweh ruled in the wilderness about such families?

  2. Whom did the daughters come to?

  3. According to what did Joshua give them land?

  4. How did Joshua answer the house of Joseph's complaint?

  5. What did Joshua say about the Canaanites' chariots?

  2. go up to the ____, and clear land

Think About It

  1. The daughters claimed a promise, while Joseph's house complained. How do these two attitudes differ?

  2. God's word protected people who could have been overlooked. Who might be overlooked around you, and how can you help?

Memory Verse

“They came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the princes, saying, “Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore according to the commandment of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.”
