Joshua 17 · Grade 4

A Promise Remembered

Name Date

Read and Think

Manasseh's lot came next, and with it a story of faith. Zelophehad had died with no sons, only five daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Years earlier Yahweh had told Moses that these daughters should receive their father's inheritance.

The daughters came to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua, and to the princes. They reminded them of what Yahweh commanded Moses, and they received land among the brothers of their father. They held on to God's word and spoke up for it.

Manasseh could not drive out the people of some cities. When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor instead. The children of Joseph also complained about having one lot. Joshua answered that a numerous people should go up, clear the forest, and trust God to help them drive out the Canaanites, though they had chariots of iron.

Show What You Know

  1. How many daughters did Zelophehad have?

  2. What had Yahweh told Moses about these daughters?

  3. What did Israel do with the Canaanites when they grew strong?

  4. What did Joshua tell the children of Joseph to clear?

Think About It

  1. The daughters remembered God's promise and spoke up. How can you hold on to God's promises?

  2. Joshua told the large tribe to work hard and trust God. Why does God sometimes ask us to work for what He gives?

Memory Verse

“They came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the princes, saying, “Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore according to the commandment of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.”
