Caleb Asks for the Hill Country

The tribes got their land by lot. Caleb came to Joshua in Gilgal. Caleb said he was forty years old when Moses sent him to spy out the land. Moses sent him from Kadesh Barnea.

Joshua 14 · Grade 4

A Faith That Did Not Fade

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 14 begins dividing the land west of the Jordan by lot, under Eleazar the priest, Joshua, and the heads of the tribes. Before any tribe's borders are listed, one man steps forward: Caleb, the faithful spy.

Caleb recalls the day at Kadesh Barnea. He brought back word as it was in my heart, while the other spies made the heart of the people melt. Caleb says, I wholly followed Yahweh my God. Moses swore that the land Caleb walked on would be his inheritance.

Forty-five years later, Caleb is eighty-five and as strong as he was the day Moses sent him. He asks for the hard assignment: the hill country with the Anakim and great and fortified cities. It may be that Yahweh will be with me, he says. Joshua blesses him and gives him Hebron.

  2. How did Caleb bring back word from spying?

  3. What hard assignment did Caleb ask for?

Joshua 14 · Grade 5

Wholehearted to the End

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 14 introduces the division of Canaan by lot, as Yahweh commanded by Moses, for the nine and a half tribes. Levi receives cities, not a territory, and Joseph counts as two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. Then, before Judah's lot is described, Caleb approaches Joshua at Gilgal with a claim based on a promise.

Caleb reminds Joshua of Kadesh Barnea forty-five years earlier. The other spies made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed Yahweh my God, Caleb says. Moses swore that the land where you walked shall be an inheritance to you and to your children forever. Caleb had waited through the whole wilderness journey, outliving a faithless generation.

Now Caleb says, As yet I am as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me. He asks for the very hill country that frightened the spies, where the Anakim lived. His confidence is in God, not himself: It may be that Yahweh will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as Yahweh said. Joshua blesses him and gives him Hebron. The chapter gives the reason plainly: Hebron became Caleb's because he followed Yahweh, the God of Israel wholeheartedly. Then the land had rest from war.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Levi's share differ from other tribes?

  2. Why does Joseph count as two tribes?

  3. How long had Caleb waited for the promise?

  4. What does Caleb say about his strength?

  5. Why did Hebron become Caleb's?
