Joshua 14 · Grade 4
A Faith That Did Not Fade
Read and Think
Joshua 14 begins dividing the land west of the Jordan by lot, under Eleazar the priest, Joshua, and the heads of the tribes. Before any tribe's borders are listed, one man steps forward: Caleb, the faithful spy.
Caleb recalls the day at Kadesh Barnea. He brought back word as it was in my heart, while the other spies made the heart of the people melt. Caleb says, I wholly followed Yahweh my God. Moses swore that the land Caleb walked on would be his inheritance.
Forty-five years later, Caleb is eighty-five and as strong as he was the day Moses sent him. He asks for the hard assignment: the hill country with the Anakim and great and fortified cities. It may be that Yahweh will be with me, he says. Joshua blesses him and gives him Hebron.
