Joshua 13 · Grade 5
Dividing by Faith
Read and Think
Joshua 13 opens the second half of the book. Now Joshua was old and well advanced in years, and Yahweh says, there remains yet very much land to be possessed. God lists regions still held by others, including the Philistines, the Geshurites, and lands toward Lebanon. Yet He promises, I will drive them out from before the children of Israel.
God's instruction is surprising: Just allocate it to Israel for an inheritance. Joshua is to divide land Israel does not yet fully hold. Dividing the land becomes an act of faith in God's future action. The chapter also admits that Israel did not drive out the Geshurites nor the Maacathites, a quiet warning of unfinished obedience.
Most of the chapter recalls the inheritance Moses gave east of the Jordan to Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh. Yet two notes frame Levi's share: the offerings of Yahweh made by fire are his inheritance, and Yahweh, the God of Israel, is their inheritance. The Levites' portion shows that the greatest gift in the promised land is the Lord Himself.
