Remembering God's Victories

Name Date

Read the Story

Joshua 12 is a list of the kings of the land that Israel struck. It helps God's people remember all He did for them.

East of the Jordan, Moses and Israel struck two kings. Sihon was king of the Amorites. Og was king of Bashan. Their land ran from the valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon. Moses gave that land to Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh.

West of the Jordan, Joshua and Israel struck the kings of the land. The list starts with the king of Jericho and the king of Ai. It ends with the king of Tirzah, all the kings thirty-one. Joshua gave the land to the tribes of Israel for a possession.

Memory Verse

Every Name Counts

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 12 looks like a dull list, but it is a record of God's faithfulness. It joins the wins under Moses east of the Jordan with the wins under Joshua west of it. It is one story under one God.

East of the Jordan, Moses and Israel struck Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon. They also struck Og king of Bashan, from the remnant of the Rephaim. Moses gave this land to Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh.

West of the Jordan, the list names each king followed by the word one: the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, one. The total is thirty-one kings. Each line is a reminder that Yahweh kept His word one city at a time.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the list record?

  2. Where did Sihon king of the Amorites live?

  3. Who was Og king of Bashan descended from?

A Record of Faithfulness

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 12 pauses the narrative to summarize the conquest. Lists like this were how ancient peoples recorded history, and in Scripture they serve as testimony. The chapter unites two leaders and two regions: what Moses accomplished east of the Jordan and what Joshua accomplished west of it.

Verses 1 through 6 recall the east: from the valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon, with all the Arabah eastward. Sihon king of the Amorites in Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, of the remnant of the Rephaim, were defeated. Moses the servant of Yahweh gave it for a possession to the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Verses 7 through 24 list the kings west of the Jordan, from Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon to Mount Halak. The repeated word one gives each victory weight: the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one. The chapter closes with the king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty-one. Behind every name stands the same promise God made in chapter 1.

Show What You Know

  1. What two leaders and regions does the chapter unite?

  2. Which verses recall the land east of the Jordan?

  3. What city was beside Ai?

  4. What does the repeated word one do?

  5. What stands behind every name in the list?
