Joshua 12 · Grade 4
Every Name Counts
Read and Think
Joshua 12 looks like a dull list, but it is a record of God's faithfulness. It joins the wins under Moses east of the Jordan with the wins under Joshua west of it. It is one story under one God.
East of the Jordan, Moses and Israel struck Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon. They also struck Og king of Bashan, from the remnant of the Rephaim. Moses gave this land to Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh.
West of the Jordan, the list names each king followed by the word one: the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, one. The total is thirty-one kings. Each line is a reminder that Yahweh kept His word one city at a time.
