Read the Story

Jabin king of Hazor heard about Israel. He sent to many kings in the north. They camped together at the waters of Merom. Their armies were as many as the sand on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots.

Yahweh said to Joshua, Don't be afraid because of them. Joshua came against them suddenly, and Yahweh gave Israel the victory. Joshua did to them as Yahweh told him.

Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. As Yahweh commanded Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. Joshua did so. He left nothing undone. So Joshua took the whole land and gave it to the tribes. Then the land had rest from war.

Obedience Down the Line

Name Date

Read and Think

The northern kings, led by Jabin of Hazor, gathered at the waters of Merom with armies like the sand on the seashore and very many horses and chariots. In human terms Israel was outmatched. Yahweh answered, Don't be afraid because of them.

Israel struck suddenly, and Yahweh delivered the enemy into their hand. God had told Joshua to burn their chariots with fire, and Joshua did as Yahweh told him. Hazor, the head of those kingdoms, fell as God's judgment. Even the Anakim, the giants who once frightened Israel's spies, were cut off from the hill country.

The key line is about obedience: As Yahweh commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua. Joshua did so. He left nothing undone. The war took a long time, but God's word was fulfilled, and the land had rest from war.

Joshua 11 · Grade 5

The Faithfulness of a Long War

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 11 reports the northern campaign. Jabin king of Hazor summons a vast coalition to the waters of Merom, as many as the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. Against so great an army, Yahweh says, Don't be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time, I will deliver them up all slain before Israel. God also commands that their chariots be burned with fire.

Hazor, the head of all those kingdoms, falls as God's judgment. The chapter is honest that the war took a long time; only Gibeon made peace. Verse 20 explains that it was of Yahweh to harden the kings' hearts to come against Israel in battle, that they might have no favor, as Yahweh commanded Moses. The Anakim, whose size had terrified the spies decades earlier, are cut off from the hill country.

The center of the chapter is obedience passed down faithfully: As Yahweh commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua. Joshua did so. He left nothing undone of all that Yahweh commanded Moses. The chapter closes with a summary: So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Yahweh spoke to Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel. Then the land had rest from war. In the New Testament, Joshua's rest points to a greater rest: There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God (Hebrews 4:9).

Show What You Know

  1. What did God command about the enemy chariots?

  2. Which city made peace with Israel?

  3. How does verse 20 explain the kings' choice to fight?

  5. Which New Testament verse speaks of a greater rest for God's people?
