Yahweh Fought for Israel

Name Date

Read the Story

Five Amorite kings joined together and camped against Gibeon. The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at Gilgal. They said, Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us!

Yahweh said to Joshua, Don't fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Joshua marched from Gilgal all night and came suddenly. As the enemy fled, Yahweh hurled down great stones from the sky.

Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh. He said, Sun, stand still on Gibeon! You, moon, stop in the valley of Aijalon! The sun stayed in the middle of the sky about a whole day. There was no day like that before it or after it. Later Joshua said, Don't be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous.

Joshua 10 · Grade 4

A Day Like No Other

Name Date

Read and Think

Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem, was alarmed that Gibeon had made peace with Israel. He and four other Amorite kings attacked Gibeon. Israel had made a covenant with Gibeon, so Joshua came to defend it, keeping his word even to people who had tricked him.

Yahweh promised, Not a man of them will stand before you. Joshua marched all night from Gilgal and struck suddenly. As the enemy fled down the descent of Beth Horon, Yahweh hurled down great hailstones on the fleeing enemy. The victory was clearly God's.

Then Joshua prayed boldly in front of all Israel: Sun, stand still on Gibeon! The sun stayed and the moon stopped until the nation had defeated its enemies. The text says there was no day like that before it or after it, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh fought for Israel. The five kings hid in a cave at Makkedah and were defeated as God's judgment.

Joshua 10 · Grade 5

Yahweh Listened to a Man

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 10 begins with fear in Jerusalem. Adoni-Zedek hears that Gibeon has made peace with Israel and gathers four other Amorite kings to attack. Gibeon sends an urgent plea to Gilgal: Don't abandon your servants! Israel's covenant with Gibeon, made through a trick, now becomes a duty, and Joshua honors it.

Yahweh assures Joshua, Don't fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you. After an all-night march, Israel strikes suddenly. Yahweh joins the battle directly, hurling great stones from the sky on the fleeing enemy along the descent of Beth Horon.

At the height of the battle, Joshua speaks to Yahweh and commands in Israel's sight, Sun, stand still on Gibeon! You, moon, stop in the valley of Aijalon! The sun stays in the middle of the sky about a whole day. The narrator marks the wonder: There was no day like that before it or after it, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh fought for Israel. Afterward Joshua encourages his captains with the words God once gave him: Don't be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous.
