Joshua 10 · Grade 5
Yahweh Listened to a Man
Read and Think
Joshua 10 begins with fear in Jerusalem. Adoni-Zedek hears that Gibeon has made peace with Israel and gathers four other Amorite kings to attack. Gibeon sends an urgent plea to Gilgal: Don't abandon your servants! Israel's covenant with Gibeon, made through a trick, now becomes a duty, and Joshua honors it.
Yahweh assures Joshua, Don't fear them, for I have delivered them into your hands. Not a man of them will stand before you. After an all-night march, Israel strikes suddenly. Yahweh joins the battle directly, hurling great stones from the sky on the fleeing enemy along the descent of Beth Horon.
At the height of the battle, Joshua speaks to Yahweh and commands in Israel's sight, Sun, stand still on Gibeon! You, moon, stop in the valley of Aijalon! The sun stays in the middle of the sky about a whole day. The narrator marks the wonder: There was no day like that before it or after it, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh fought for Israel. Afterward Joshua encourages his captains with the words God once gave him: Don't be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous.
