Joshua 1 · Grade 4

Courage From God's Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 1 opens with a change of leaders. Moses is dead, and God speaks to Joshua, Moses' helper. God commands him to cross the Jordan with all Israel and promises the land from the wilderness to the river Euphrates.

God gives Joshua two gifts: His presence and His word. I will not fail you nor forsake you, God promises. Joshua must be strong and very courageous to obey the law, not turning to the right or the left. The book of the law should not depart from his mouth, so he would have good success.

Joshua acts at once. He tells the people to prepare food for the crossing in three days. He reminds the eastern tribes of their promise to Moses, and they answer that they will listen to Joshua as they listened to Moses. In the New Testament, God gives this promise to all believers: I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).

Joshua 1 · Grade 5

Strength for a New Season

Name Date

Read and Think

Joshua 1 marks the moment Israel moves from wilderness wandering to entering the promise. Moses my servant is dead, God tells Joshua, then immediately commands him to arise and cross the Jordan. The promise is not new; God reminds Joshua that He gave every place the sole of their foot would tread on, as He told Moses.

God's charge contains a repeated command and a repeated reason. Be strong and courageous appears in verses 6, 7, and 9. The reason is God's presence: As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. True success is defined by obedience: Joshua must meditate on the book of the law day and night and observe all that is written in it.

Joshua passes the charge on. The officers prepare the people, and the two and a half tribes east of the Jordan pledge to fight alongside their brothers. Their answer even echoes God's words to Joshua: Only be strong and courageous. In the New Testament, believers hear God's promise, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. So with good courage they say, The Lord is my helper (Hebrews 13:5-6).

  2. How is true success defined in this chapter?
