Joshua 1 · Grade 5
Strength for a New Season
Read and Think
Joshua 1 marks the moment Israel moves from wilderness wandering to entering the promise. Moses my servant is dead, God tells Joshua, then immediately commands him to arise and cross the Jordan. The promise is not new; God reminds Joshua that He gave every place the sole of their foot would tread on, as He told Moses.
God's charge contains a repeated command and a repeated reason. Be strong and courageous appears in verses 6, 7, and 9. The reason is God's presence: As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. True success is defined by obedience: Joshua must meditate on the book of the law day and night and observe all that is written in it.
Joshua passes the charge on. The officers prepare the people, and the two and a half tribes east of the Jordan pledge to fight alongside their brothers. Their answer even echoes God's words to Joshua: Only be strong and courageous. In the New Testament, believers hear God's promise, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. So with good courage they say, The Lord is my helper (Hebrews 13:5-6).
