Lord, I Believe

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus saw a man blind from birth. The disciples asked whose sin caused it. Jesus said it was not because of anyone's sin. It happened so that God's works could be shown. Jesus spit on the ground, made mud, and put it on the man's eyes. He told him to wash in the pool of Siloam. The man went, washed, and came back seeing.

Neighbors were amazed. The Pharisees questioned the man, because it was the Sabbath. Some said Jesus could not be from God. The man said Jesus was a prophet. They asked his parents, who were afraid of being put out of the synagogue. The man said, One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see. He said if Jesus were not from God, He could do nothing. So they threw him out.

Jesus found the man and asked if he believed in the Son of Man. The man asked who He was. Jesus said He was the one speaking to him. The man said, Lord, I believe! and worshiped Him.

Memory Verse

John 9 · Grade 4

Who Is Really Blind?

Name Date

Read and Think

When the disciples saw a man born blind, they assumed someone's sin caused it. Jesus said no. This was an opportunity for God's work to be shown. Jesus said, While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. Then He made mud, put it on the man's eyes, and sent him to wash in the pool of Siloam, which means Sent. The man came back seeing for the first time in his life.

The Pharisees investigated. Because Jesus made mud on the Sabbath, some said He was a sinner. They questioned the man's parents, who were afraid and said, Ask him. The man boldly answered, Though I was blind, now I see. He grew braver. He asked if they wanted to become Jesus' disciples too! He reasoned that God does not listen to sinners, so Jesus must be from God. The angry leaders threw him out.

Jesus searched for the man and found him. The man believed in Jesus and worshiped Him. Jesus said He came so that the blind would see and those who think they see would become blind. The Pharisees asked if they were blind. They could see with their eyes, but their hearts refused to see who Jesus was.

John 9 · Grade 5

One Thing I Know

Name Date

Read and Think

John 9 tells of the sixth sign in John's Gospel, and it is also a story about seeing. The disciples asked who sinned, the man or his parents. Jesus said neither. This man's blindness would display God's works. Jesus, the light of the world, made clay and anointed the man's eyes, much as God formed Adam from the ground. He sent him to wash in Siloam, meaning Sent. The man obeyed and came back seeing.

The Pharisees could not deny the miracle, so they attacked it. Jesus had made clay on the Sabbath. They argued among themselves. They interrogated the man's parents, who feared being expelled from the synagogue. Twice they questioned the man. His understanding of Jesus grew. First he called Him a man called Jesus, then a prophet, and then a man from God. He said, One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see. The leaders insulted him and drove him out.

When the synagogue rejected him, Jesus sought him out. Jesus asked, Do you believe in the Son of God? The man said, Lord, I believe! and he worshiped him. Jesus explained the deeper lesson. He came so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind. The proud Pharisees claimed they could see. Because they refused to admit their blindness, their sin remained. The humble beggar received both physical and spiritual sight.

Show What You Know

  1. How is Jesus making clay for the man's eyes like Genesis?

  2. How did the man's understanding of Jesus grow?

  3. What did the man say was the one thing he knew?

  4. What did Jesus do when the synagogue rejected the man?

  5. Why did the Pharisees' sin remain?
