I Am the Bread of Life

Name Date

Read the Story

A great crowd followed Jesus because they saw His signs. Jesus asked Philip where they could buy bread. Andrew found a boy with five barley loaves and two fish. Jesus had the people sit on the grass. He gave thanks and passed out the food. About five thousand men ate as much as they wanted. The leftovers filled twelve baskets.

That evening the disciples rowed across the sea. A strong wind blew. They saw Jesus walking on the water and were afraid. He said, It is I. Don't be afraid.

The next day the crowd found Jesus again. He said they came because they ate bread, not because they saw who He was. He told them God gave their fathers manna in the wilderness. But He is the true bread from heaven. He said, I am the bread of life. Many followers left Him. Peter said they had nowhere else to go, because Jesus has the words of eternal life.

Bread from Heaven

Name Date

Read and Think

Near the Passover, a large crowd followed Jesus to a mountain. Jesus tested Philip by asking where to buy bread. Philip said even a lot of money would not be enough. Andrew found a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. Jesus gave thanks and fed about five thousand men, with twelve baskets left over. The people wanted to make Him king by force, so He went away alone.

That night a storm rose on the sea. The disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, and they were terrified. He said, It is I. Don't be afraid. When they took Him into the boat, they quickly reached the shore.

The crowd searched for Jesus, wanting more food. Jesus told them to work for food that lasts to eternal life. Then He said, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty. Some grumbled, and many disciples stopped following Him. Jesus asked the twelve if they wanted to leave. Peter answered that Jesus alone has the words of eternal life.

John 6 · Grade 5

Lord, to Whom Would We Go?

Name Date

Read and Think

John 6 begins with a sign that echoes Israel's story. As Moses led Israel through the wilderness, God fed them with manna. Now, near the Passover, Jesus fed a multitude on a mountainside. A boy's five barley loaves and two fish became a feast for about five thousand men. Twelve baskets of fragments were gathered so nothing would be lost. The people said this must be the Prophet like Moses, and they wanted to make Him king. But Jesus would not be the kind of king they wanted.

That night Jesus came to His frightened disciples walking on the stormy sea. He said, It is I. In Greek, these words are the same as I am, the name God used for Himself. Jesus was showing that He has power over creation.

The next day Jesus taught in the synagogue at Capernaum. The crowd wanted another sign, like the manna. Jesus said the Father gives the true bread from heaven. Then He said, I am the bread of life. As bread gives life to the body, Jesus gives eternal life to all who come to Him and believe. He said He would give His flesh for the life of the world, pointing to the cross. Many found this a hard saying and turned away. Peter spoke for the twelve: Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.
