Do You Want to Be Made Well?

Name Date

Read the Story

In Jerusalem there was a pool called Bethesda with five porches. Many people who were sick, blind or lame lay there. One man had been ill for thirty-eight years. Jesus asked him, Do you want to be made well? The man said he had no one to put him in the water.

Jesus said, Arise, take up your mat, and walk. At once the man was healed. He picked up his mat and walked. But it was the Sabbath, and some leaders said he was breaking the law by carrying his mat. Later Jesus found him in the temple and told him to stop sinning.

The leaders were angry that Jesus healed on the Sabbath. Jesus said His Father is always working, and so is He. He said He does what He sees the Father doing. Whoever hears His word and believes has eternal life. Jesus said the Scriptures, John the Baptist and His own works all tell about Him.

Jesus said to him, “Arise, take up your mat, and walk.”

The Son Gives Life

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus went to Jerusalem for a feast. By the pool of Bethesda lay many people who were sick. One man had been unable to walk for thirty-eight years. Jesus knew how long he had suffered. He asked if he wanted to be healed. The man explained he had no one to help him. Jesus simply told him to get up, take up his mat, and walk, and he was healed at once.

It was the Sabbath. Some leaders cared more about their rules than about the man's healing. When they learned Jesus healed him, they began to persecute Jesus. Jesus answered that His Father was working and He was working too. The leaders understood that He was calling God His own Father and making Himself equal with God.

Jesus explained that the Son does what the Father does. As the Father raises the dead and gives life, the Son gives life to whom He wants. Whoever hears Jesus' word and believes the Father has eternal life and has passed from death to life. Jesus said the Scriptures testify about Him. Moses wrote about Him too.

John 5 · Grade 5

From Death to Life

Name Date

Read and Think

John 5 tells of the third sign in this Gospel. At the pool of Bethesda, a man had waited for healing for thirty-eight years. Jesus asked a searching question: Do you want to be made well? The man only gave reasons why he could not be helped. Jesus did not need the pool. He spoke, and the man rose, picked up his mat, and walked. Later Jesus warned him to stop sinning so that something worse would not happen. Jesus cares about our bodies, but even more about our souls.

Because it was the Sabbath, the leaders objected. Jesus replied, My Father is still working, so I am working too. God keeps the world going even on the Sabbath, and Jesus claimed the same right. The leaders saw this as making Himself equal with God, and they sought to kill Him. Jesus did not take back His claim.

Instead, Jesus explained His relationship with the Father. The Son can do nothing by Himself except what He sees the Father doing. The Father has given the Son authority to give life and to judge. Most truly, he who hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and has passed out of death into life. Jesus listed witnesses: John the Baptist, His works, the Father, and the Scriptures. The tragedy was that the leaders searched the Scriptures but refused to come to the One the Scriptures were about.

Show What You Know

  1. How did the man answer Jesus' question about being made well?

  2. What did Jesus warn the man about later, and what does this show?

  3. Why did Jesus say He could work on the Sabbath?

  5. What was the tragedy about the leaders and the Scriptures?
