New Life from God

Name Date

Read and Think

Nicodemus was an important religious leader. He came to Jesus by night, perhaps so others would not see him. He knew Jesus came from God. But Jesus told him something surprising. No one can see God's Kingdom unless he is born again. Being good or religious is not enough. We need a new birth that only God can give.

Nicodemus was confused. Jesus explained that this new birth is from the Spirit. It is like the wind. You hear it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. Then Jesus pointed to a story from Numbers. When snakes bit the Israelites, God told Moses to lift up a bronze snake. Whoever looked at it lived. In the same way, Jesus would be lifted up on the cross, so that whoever believes in Him would have eternal life.

Jesus said God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Light has come into the world. People who do evil hide from it, but those who do what is true come to the light. John the Baptist was glad to step aside. He was like the friend of a bridegroom, full of joy because Jesus had come.
