The Temple of His Body

Name Date

Read and Think

John's Gospel is built around signs that reveal Jesus' glory. The first was quiet. The servants who drew the water knew what happened. At a village wedding, the wine ran out. Mary brought the need to Jesus and told the servants, Whatever he says to you, do it. Jesus used six stone jars meant for ceremonial washing. Each held twenty or thirty gallons. Filled to the brim, they became the finest wine. The old ways of washing were being filled with something new and better. Jesus brings the joy of God's Kingdom in abundance.

This beginning of signs revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. That is the purpose of every sign in John: that we would believe.

At Passover in Jerusalem, Jesus found the temple courts full of animal sellers and money changers. Background: this was the outer court, where people from other nations could come to pray. It had been turned into a market. Jesus drove out the sellers with a whip of cords. He overturned the tables and said, Don't make my Father's house a marketplace. By calling God His Father, He showed His unique relationship with God. When challenged, He said, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. The leaders thought of the building. But He spoke of the temple of his body. Jesus Himself is where God meets His people.
