My Kingdom Is Not of This World

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus crossed the brook Kidron to a garden. Judas brought soldiers with lanterns and weapons. Jesus asked, Who are you looking for? They said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said, I am he, and they fell back to the ground. Jesus asked them to let His disciples go. Peter cut off the ear of Malchus, a servant. Jesus told Peter to put away his sword.

The soldiers took Jesus to Annas and then to Caiaphas. Peter waited in the courtyard by a fire. Three times people asked if he was Jesus' disciple. Three times Peter denied it. Then the rooster crowed.

Early in the morning they took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate asked if He was the King of the Jews. Jesus said, My Kingdom is not of this world. He said He came to testify to the truth. Pilate asked, What is truth? Pilate said he found no crime in Jesus. But the crowd asked him to release Barabbas, a robber, instead. But Jesus chose to give Himself up, because He knew God's plan would end in victory.

John 18 · Grade 4

I Am He

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus knew everything that would happen, yet He went forward to meet the soldiers. When He said, I am he, they drew back and fell to the ground. This showed His power. He was not captured against His will. He gave Himself up. Even then, He protected His disciples. When Peter struck with a sword, Jesus said He would drink the cup the Father had given Him.

Jesus was bound and questioned by Annas, and an officer struck Him. Meanwhile, Peter stood warming himself at a charcoal fire. He denied Jesus three times, just as Jesus had said. The rooster crowed. In the same hours that Jesus stood firm, Peter failed.

Before Pilate, Jesus explained that His kingdom is not of this world. If it were, His servants would fight. He came to bear witness to the truth, and everyone who is of the truth hears His voice. Pilate asked, What is truth? He did not wait for an answer, though the Truth stood before him. Pilate found no fault, yet he let the crowd choose. They chose Barabbas. Jesus gave Himself up because He knew God's plan would end in victory (John 20).

John 18 · Grade 5

The King on Trial

Name Date

Read and Think

John 18 shows Jesus in full control even as He is arrested. He went to a familiar garden, where Judas knew to find Him. Judas came with a detachment of soldiers and temple officers carrying lanterns, torches and weapons. Jesus, knowing all things, stepped forward. When He answered, I am he, the soldiers drew back and fell to the ground. These words echo God's name, I AM. Jesus then asked them to let His disciples go, fulfilling His promise that He would lose none. Peter's sword was the wrong response. Jesus said, The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?

John interweaves two trials. Inside, Jesus was questioned by Annas and struck unjustly, yet answered with truth and dignity. Outside, Peter warmed himself at a charcoal fire and denied Jesus three times. Peter feared a servant girl, while Jesus faced the high priest. Peter's story did not end here. Another charcoal fire would appear in chapter 21.

Before Pilate, the leaders would not enter the governor's headquarters so they could eat the Passover. Yet they were handing over the true Passover Lamb. Jesus told Pilate, My Kingdom is not of this world. He is a King who came to testify to the truth. Pilate asked, What is truth? He declared Jesus innocent three times (18:38; 19:4, 6). Still, he offered a choice, and the crowd cried out for Barabbas, a robber. The guilty went free while the innocent One was condemned, a picture of what Jesus does for sinners.

  1. How does John show that Jesus was in control during His arrest?

  2. What was ironic about the leaders not entering Pilate's headquarters?

  3. How do the two trials contrast Peter and Jesus?

  4. What hint does John give that Peter's story did not end in failure?

  5. How does the choice of Barabbas picture what Jesus does for sinners?
