The Prayer of Jesus

Name Date

Read and Think

John 17 records Jesus' longest prayer in the Gospels. He prayed in the hearing of His disciples, just before going to the garden. First He prayed for Himself. The hour had come. He asked the Father to glorify Him with the glory He had before the world existed. Jesus said eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ.

Next Jesus prayed for His disciples. They belonged to the Father, and the Father had given them to Jesus. Jesus had kept them safe, except Judas, the son of destruction. Now He asked the Father to protect them from the evil one. They would stay in the world, like Jesus, but not belong to it. He asked God to sanctify them, or set them apart, by the truth of His word.

Finally Jesus prayed for all future believers. That includes Christians today. He prayed that they would be one, sharing the unity of the Father and the Son. Their unity and love would show the world that the Father sent Jesus. Jesus wanted them to be with Him and see His glory.
