I Know My Sheep

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus said a thief climbs into the sheep pen another way, but the shepherd enters by the door. The shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. They follow him because they know his voice. Jesus said, I am the door. Whoever enters through Me will be saved. The thief comes to steal, but I came that they may have life to the full.

Jesus said, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired worker runs away when a wolf comes, but Jesus will not. He has other sheep too, and there will be one flock with one shepherd. He will lay down His life and take it up again.

At the Feast of Dedication, people asked if He was the Christ. Jesus said, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. He gives them eternal life, and no one can snatch them out of His hand. He said, I and the Father are one. Some picked up stones, but Jesus escaped. Many believed in Him.

The Shepherd Who Gives His Life

Name Date

Read and Think

In Bible times, shepherds kept their sheep in a pen at night. In the morning the shepherd called them, and they followed his voice. Jesus used this picture. He is the door of the sheep, the only way in. Those who enter through Him are saved and find pasture. Thieves come to steal and destroy, but Jesus came so His sheep may have life, and have it abundantly.

Then Jesus said, I am the good shepherd. A hired hand cares about pay, not the sheep, and runs when the wolf comes. But Jesus knows His sheep, and they know Him. He would lay down His life for them by His own choice, and He would take it up again. He also has other sheep, not of this fold, and He will bring them in too. That includes Gentiles, people from every nation.

Some people asked Jesus to tell them plainly if He was the Christ. He said His works showed it, but they did not believe because they were not His sheep. His sheep hear His voice and follow Him. He gives them eternal life, and no one can snatch them out of His hand or the Father's hand. When He said He and the Father are one, they tried to stone Him. He went away across the Jordan, and many believed there.

No One Will Snatch Them

Name Date

Read and Think

Shepherding was a familiar picture in Israel. God called Himself the Shepherd of His people in Psalm 23 and Ezekiel 34, and He promised a shepherd from David's line. In John 10, Jesus said He fulfills those promises. He is the door of the sheepfold. Whoever enters through Him will be saved and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy. Jesus came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

He also said, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. This was voluntary. No one would take His life from Him. He would lay it down by His own authority and take it up again, as the Father commanded. Jesus knows His own as the Father knows Him. He would also gather other sheep, not of this fold, into one flock with one shepherd.

At the Feast of Dedication in winter, the leaders surrounded Him and demanded a plain answer. Jesus said His works in the Father's name testify about Him. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. Then He said, I and the Father are one. His enemies took up stones, calling this blasphemy. Jesus pointed them to His works. They tried to seize Him, but He escaped. Across the Jordan, many believed in Him.
