John 1 · Grade 4
In the Beginning Was the Word
Read and Think
John's Gospel opens before time began. The Word already existed. He was with God, and He was God. Through Him all things were made. In Him was life, and His life was the light of all people. The darkness has never been able to put that light out.
The Word came into the world He had made, but many did not receive Him. Yet to all who did receive Him and believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw His glory, full of grace and truth. No one has ever seen God, but the Son has made Him known.
John the Baptist said he was not the Christ. He was a voice preparing the way. When he saw Jesus, he called Him the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Two of John's disciples followed Jesus. Jesus asked what they were looking for and said, Come, and see. One of them, Andrew, found his brother Simon and said they had found the Messiah. Soon Philip and Nathanael followed too.
