Joel 2 · Grade 4

I Will Restore the Years

Name Date

Read and Think

Joel 2 opens with an alarm: Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain! The day of Yahweh is pictured as a great army that no one can stop. The land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them, a desolate wilderness.

Then God invites: Yet even now, says Yahweh, turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning. Tear your heart and not your garments. In those days people tore their clothes to show sorrow, but God wanted real change inside. He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness.

God responds with mercy. Then Yahweh was jealous for his land, and had pity on his people. He promises rain and full harvests: I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten. He also promises: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. In the New Testament, Peter quoted this at Pentecost and said, whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved (Acts 2:21).
