Joel 1 · Grade 4

Sanctify a Fast

Name Date

Read and Think

Joel describes a disaster: What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. One wave after another stripped the land. Joel asked, Has this ever happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?

The land mourns, for the grain is destroyed. The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered. Even joy has withered away from the sons of men. The animals of the field pant to you, for the water brooks have dried up.

Joel's answer was to turn to God. Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of Yahweh, your God, and cry to Yahweh. Joel warned that the day of Yahweh is at hand, a day of God's judgment. Joel himself prayed: Yahweh, I cry to you.

Joel 1 · Grade 5

Cry to Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Joel 1 opens with a disaster no one had seen before. Hear this, you elders, and listen, all you inhabitants of the land! Has this ever happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers? Tell your children about it, and have your children tell their children, and their children, another generation. Joel wanted the lesson remembered for generations.

Joel describes the plague in waves: What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten. He compares the swarm to an invading nation: For a nation has come up on my land, strong, and without number. The field is laid waste. Even the offerings at the temple stopped, because there was no grain or wine. Joy has withered away from the sons of men.

Joel calls for repentance: Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of Yahweh, your God, and cry to Yahweh. He warns, Alas for the day! For the day of Yahweh is at hand. The day of Yahweh means a day when God acts in judgment. Joel leads by example: Yahweh, I cry to you.

  2. What waves of insects does Joel name?
