Job 9 · Grade 3

How Can Man Be Just with God?

Name Date

Read the Story

Job said, Truly I know that it is so, but how can man be just with God? He said God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. No one has hardened himself against God and prospered.

Job praised God's power. God removes the mountains and shakes the earth. He alone stretches out the heavens, and treads on the waves of the sea. He makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades. He does great things past finding out.

But Job felt small before God. He said God is not a man like him, so they cannot come together in judgment. Job said, There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hand on us both. In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:5 says there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

Job 9 · Grade 4

Longing for an Umpire

Name Date

Read and Think

Job agreed with Bildad that God is just. But he asked a deeper question: how can man be just with God? If someone tried to argue with God, he could not answer Him one time in a thousand. God is wise in heart and mighty in strength.

Job described God's power over creation. He removes mountains, shakes the earth, commands the sun, and seals up the stars. He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea. He made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades. He goes by, and Job cannot see Him.

Job felt that even if he were righteous, he could not win a case with God. In despair he said bitter things about how God treats the blameless and the wicked. Then he said that God is not a man as he is, and there is no umpire between them to lay his hand on them both. In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:5 says there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

Job 9 · Grade 5

No Umpire Between Us

Name Date

Read and Think

Job answers Bildad: Truly I know that it is so, but how can man be just with God? He does not deny God's justice, but he sees the problem from the other side. If he is pleased to contend with him, he can't answer him one time in a thousand. God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?

Job's praise of God's power is magnificent. He removes the mountains and shakes the earth out of its place. He commands the sun and it doesn't rise, and seals up the stars. He alone stretches out the heavens, and treads on the waves of the sea. He makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades. He does great things past finding out. Yet Job cannot see Him: he goes by me, and I don't see him.

This power overwhelms Job. Even if he were righteous, his own mouth would condemn him. In despair he says God destroys the blameless and the wicked alike, words he will later regret in chapter 42. Then he voices a profound longing: For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him. There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hand on us both. In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:5 says there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Job's longing points forward to the Mediator God would provide.
