Job 9 · Grade 4
Longing for an Umpire
Read and Think
Job agreed with Bildad that God is just. But he asked a deeper question: how can man be just with God? If someone tried to argue with God, he could not answer Him one time in a thousand. God is wise in heart and mighty in strength.
Job described God's power over creation. He removes mountains, shakes the earth, commands the sun, and seals up the stars. He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea. He made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades. He goes by, and Job cannot see Him.
Job felt that even if he were righteous, he could not win a case with God. In despair he said bitter things about how God treats the blameless and the wicked. Then he said that God is not a man as he is, and there is no umpire between them to lay his hand on them both. In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:5 says there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
