Job 7 · Grade 3

I Will Not Keep Silent

Name Date

Read the Story

Job said his days were like the days of a hired hand. When he lay down at night, he asked when he would arise. He tossed and turned until the dawning of the day.

Job said, My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope. He asked God to remember that his life is a breath. As a cloud vanishes away, so a person who dies will not return to his house.

Then Job said he would not keep silent. He would speak in the anguish of his spirit. He asked God, What is man, that you should magnify him? He asked why God did not pardon him. Job was hurting, but he still spoke to God.

Memory Verse

“Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

Job 7 · Grade 4

A Breath and a Cloud

Name Date

Read and Think

Job described his life as hard labor, like the days of a hired hand who longs for evening. He spent months of misery and nights of trouble. When he lay down he asked when the night would be gone, and he tossed and turned until dawn.

Job's days were swifter than a weaver's shuttle and spent without hope. He asked God to remember that his life is a breath. He compared death to a cloud that vanishes away. Soon his place would know him no more.

Job then spoke directly to God. Therefore I will not keep silent, he said. He even felt God was frightening him with dreams. He asked, What is man, that you should magnify him? He wondered why God watched him so closely and why God would not pardon his disobedience and take away his iniquity.

Job 7 · Grade 5

What Is Man?

Name Date

Read and Think

Job's speech turns from his friends to God. Isn't a man forced to labor on earth? His days are like those of a hired hand longing for the shadow. He has been made to possess months of misery, and wearisome nights. When I lie down, I say, When will I arise, and the night be gone? He tosses until dawn. My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.

He asks God, Oh remember that my life is a breath. As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will come up no more. Then he resolves: Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. He feels watched like the sea under a guard and troubled even in dreams. He is so weary that he says he loathes his life.

Job then echoes words like Psalm 8. What is man, that you should magnify him, that you should set your mind on him? In the psalm, these words wonder at God's care. In Job's mouth they become a complaint that God will not leave him alone. He asks, Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? Job does not yet see God's purpose, but he keeps speaking to God rather than turning away.
