Job 6 · Grade 5

A Faint Man's Plea

Name Date

Read and Think

Job's reply begins with the weight of his suffering. Oh that my anguish were weighed! It would be heavier than the sand of the seas, therefore my words have been rash. He feels the arrows of the Almighty within him. In his despair he wishes God would let loose His hand and cut him off. Yet one consolation remains: I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

Job turns to his friends. To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend. Instead, his brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook. Such streams swell with ice and snow, but in the dry season they vanish. The caravans of Tema looked, and the companies of Sheba waited, but they came there and were confounded. Job says his friends see a terror and are afraid.

Job has not asked them for money or rescue. He asks for honest truth: Teach me, and I will hold my peace. Cause me to understand my error. How forcible are words of uprightness! But your reproof, what does it reprove? He begs them to look at him, for surely he will not lie to their faces. Please return. Let there be no injustice. My cause is righteous. Job is not claiming to be sinless, but he denies that a hidden sin explains his suffering.
