Job 5 · Grade 2

Seek God

Name Date

Read the Story

Eliphaz kept talking. He said that if he were Job, he would seek God. He said God does great things. God gives rain on the earth. God sends water on the fields.

Eliphaz said God helps the poor. He said the poor have hope. These things about God are true.

But Eliphaz also thought God was punishing Job for sin. That was not true. Eliphaz was wrong about Job. At the end, God said the friends did not speak what was right.

Memory Verse

Happy Is the One God Corrects

Name Date

Read the Story

Eliphaz said, But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God. He said God does great things that can't be fathomed. God gives rain on the earth and sends waters on the fields. He sets up on high those who are low.

Eliphaz said God frustrates the plans of the crafty, saves the needy, and gives the poor hope. He said, Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. He said God wounds and binds up, and His hands make whole.

Eliphaz promised Job peace and many children if he would accept God's correction. Many of his words about God are true. But he was wrong to think Job's trouble was punishment for sin. God later said the friends had not spoken what was right.

Job 5 · Grade 4

True Words, Wrong Use

Name Date

Read and Think

Eliphaz told Job that no holy one would answer him and that man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward. Then he gave his advice: as for me, I would seek God and commit my cause to God. He praised God, who does great things that can't be fathomed, gives rain on the earth, and lifts up those who mourn.

Eliphaz said God frustrates the plans of the crafty and takes the wise in their own craftiness. In the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 3:19 quotes these very words to show that the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. Eliphaz also said that happy is the man whom God corrects, for He wounds and binds up.

Eliphaz promised that if Job accepted correction, God would deliver him in six troubles, give him peace, and many offspring. Much of this praise is true. Yet his whole counsel rested on the idea that Job was being corrected for sin. God later said the friends had not spoken what is right.

Job 5 · Grade 5

Eliphaz's Counsel

Name Date

Read and Think

Eliphaz continues by telling Job that no holy one will answer him, that resentment kills the foolish man, and that man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward. His counsel is to seek God: But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God, who does great things that can't be fathomed, marvelous things without number; who gives rain on the earth, and sends waters on the fields.

Eliphaz praises God for setting up on high those who are low and for frustrating the plans of the crafty. He takes the wise in their own craftiness. In the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 3:19 quotes this line to show that the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. Eliphaz then says, Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty. For he wounds and binds up.

Eliphaz ends with promises: deliverance in six troubles, peace with the animals of the field, many offspring, and a full age. He closes, Behold, we have researched it. It is so. Hear it, and know it for your good. His words about God's power are often true, and discipline from God is real. But his diagnosis of Job is wrong. Job's suffering was not correction for sin, and in Job 42:7 God says the friends have not spoken of Him what is right.

  1. What does Eliphaz say man is born to?

  2. What does Eliphaz say God does for those who are low?

  3. How does the New Testament use Eliphaz's words about the crafty?

  5. Why is Eliphaz's diagnosis of Job wrong?
