Job 41 · Grade 4

Who Can Stand Before Me?

Name Date

Read and Think

Can you draw out Leviathan with a fish hook, or press down his tongue with a cord? Can you put a rope into his nose? God asks if Leviathan will make a covenant with Job and become his servant forever. Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more.

None is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? If no one can stand against a creature, no one can stand against the Creator. Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine. God owes no one anything.

God describes Leviathan in detail. Strong scales are his pride. His breath kindles coals. He counts iron as straw. On earth there is not his equal. He is king over all the sons of pride. Yet this proud creature is still under God's rule. Job learns that God is Lord over even the most frightening things.

Job 41 · Grade 5

The Lord over Leviathan

Name Date

Read and Think

God's second speech reaches its high point with Leviathan, a mighty creature of the sea. Can you draw out Leviathan with a fish hook, or press down his tongue with a cord? Will you play with him as with a bird? Behold, the hope of him is in vain. Job cannot capture, tame, or sell this creature. Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more.

Then God draws the lesson: None is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine. Job had wanted to bring God to court. But God is not in anyone's debt, and no one can put Him on trial.

God describes Leviathan's power. Strong scales are his pride, shut up together with a close seal. Out of his mouth go burning torches. He counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. He makes the deep to boil like a pot. He sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride. Leviathan rules the proud creatures, but God rules Leviathan. God made what humans fear, and He holds it in His hand.

Show What You Know

  1. Where does Leviathan live?

  2. What can Job not do to Leviathan?

  3. What lesson does God draw?

  4. What does God say about everything under the heavens?

  5. Who rules Leviathan?
