Job 40 · Grade 5

The Humbling of Job

Name Date

Read and Think

Yahweh pressed His question: Shall he who argues contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it. Throughout the dialogue Job had demanded that God answer him. Now the Almighty stands before him, and Job has nothing to say.

Job answered, Behold, I am of small account. What will I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. I have spoken once, and I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further. This is the beginning of Job's humility. He does not curse God, but he stops accusing Him.

God continues: Now brace yourself like a man. Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified? Job had been right that he was not suffering for a hidden sin, but wrong to suggest God was unjust. God invites Job to rule the world and humble every proud person, if he can. Then God points to behemoth: See now behemoth, which I made as well as you. He is the chief of the ways of God. Only his Maker can rule him.

Show What You Know

  1. What had Job demanded throughout the dialogue?

  2. What does Job stop doing?

  3. What was Job right about?

  4. What was Job wrong to suggest?

  5. Who alone can rule behemoth?
