Job 39 · Grade 5

The Wisdom of the Creator

Name Date

Read and Think

God's questions move from the sky to the wild animals. Do you know the time when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears fawns? These animals live far from people, yet God knows every birth. He gives freedom to the wild donkey, who scorns the tumult of the city. The range of the mountains is his pasture. He searches after every green thing.

Will the wild ox be content to serve you? Or will he stay by your feeding trough? Job cannot tame the wild ox. God describes the ostrich, which seems careless with her eggs because God has deprived her of wisdom, yet she outruns the horse. Each creature is strange and wonderful, and each one shows that God's ways are bigger than human understanding.

Have you given the horse might? Have you clothed his neck with a quivering mane? The war horse mocks at fear, and is not dismayed. Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, and stretches her wings toward the south? Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up, and makes his nest on high? The answer is plainly no. Job learns that the world runs by God's wisdom, and that the God who cares for wild animals also cares for him.
