Job 36 · Grade 4

Delivered by Affliction

Name Date

Read and Think

Elihu said he had more to say on God's behalf. Behold, God is mighty, and doesn't despise anyone. He is mighty in strength of understanding. He doesn't preserve the life of the wicked, but gives justice to the afflicted.

Elihu said God opens people's ears to instruction and commands that they return from iniquity. He delivers the afflicted by their affliction, and opens their ear in oppression. Elihu meant that God can use hard times to teach. He warned Job not to let riches or bitterness turn him aside.

Then Elihu praised God: Behold, God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him? Behold, God is great, and we don't know him. The number of his years is unsearchable. God draws up drops of water, spreads the clouds, and covers his hands with the lightning. Elihu said some true things about God, but he was also too harsh with Job, and God Himself has the final word.

Job 36 · Grade 5

God Is Great, and We Don't Know Him

Name Date

Read and Think

Elihu claims to speak on God's behalf: I will get my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker. His central claim is beautiful: Behold, God is mighty, and doesn't despise anyone. He is mighty in strength of understanding. God's power never makes Him cold toward people. He gives justice to the afflicted.

Elihu develops his teaching about suffering. God opens their ears to instruction, and commands that they return from iniquity. If they listen and serve him, they prosper, but the godless in heart lay up anger. He delivers the afflicted by their affliction, and opens their ear in oppression. Elihu warns Job: Don't let riches entice you to wrath, and take heed, don't regard iniquity. Elihu assumes Job needs correction, which is only partly true.

Elihu turns to praise: Behold, God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him? Remember that you magnify his work, about which men have sung. Behold, God is great, and we don't know him. The number of his years is unsearchable. He draws up the drops of water and distills rain. Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds? His description of the storm leads directly toward God speaking out of the whirlwind in chapter 38.
