Job 35 · Grade 4

God Who Gives Songs in the Night

Name Date

Read and Think

Elihu told Job to look to the skies, and see. See the skies, which are higher than you. If the skies are so high, God is higher still. Elihu said Job's sins could not harm God, and Job's righteousness gave God nothing He needed. Our actions mostly affect other people.

Elihu said people cry out when they are oppressed, but often they only want relief. No one says, Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night, who teaches us more than the animals? They cry, but they do not seek God Himself.

Elihu said, Surely God will not hear an empty cry. He told Job, The cause is before him, and you wait for him! Elihu meant that Job's case was already before God. Elihu was harsh when he said Job spoke empty words, but he was right that Job should wait for God. Elihu said some true things about God, but he was also too harsh with Job, and God Himself has the final word.

Job 35 · Grade 5

The Cause Is Before Him

Name Date

Read and Think

Elihu asks Job whether it is right to claim more righteousness than God. Then he points upward: Look to the skies, and see. See the skies, which are higher than you. If you have sinned, what effect do you have against him? If you are righteous, what do you give him? God is not hurt or helped by people as though He needed them. Your wickedness may hurt a man as you are, and your righteousness may profit a son of man.

Elihu describes people under oppression: By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out. But none says, Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night, who teaches us more than the animals of the earth? There they cry, but no one answers, because of the pride of evil men. A cry only for relief, without seeking God, is an empty cry.

Elihu applies this to Job: How much less when you say you don't see him. The cause is before him, and you wait for him! Job's case is already before God, so Job should wait in trust. Elihu then calls Job's words empty, which is too harsh. Yet his point that God gives songs in the night, and that Job should wait, prepares for God's own voice in chapter 38.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Elihu say Job's sin or righteousness does not affect God?

  2. What question do the oppressed fail to ask?

  3. What is an empty cry, according to Elihu?

  4. What does Elihu say about Job's case?

  5. How does Elihu's speech prepare for chapter 38?
