Job 29 · Grade 3

A Father to the Needy

Name Date

Read the Story

Job said, Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me. God's lamp shone on his head, and the friendship of God was in his tent.

When Job went to the city gate, young men stepped back and old men stood up. Job said, I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had no one to help him. He caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

Job said, I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy. This shows that what the friends said about Job was not true.

Job 29 · Grade 4

When God Watched Over Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Job longed for the days when God watched over him, when his lamp shone on my head, and by his light I walked through darkness. The friendship of God was in his tent, and his children were around him.

Job had been honored in his city. When he sat at the gate, princes stopped talking and nobles were hushed. People listened and waited for his counsel. They waited for me as for the rain. Job smiled on them when they had no confidence.

Job used his position to help others. I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also. I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy. I put on righteousness, and it clothed me. Eliphaz had said Job sent widows away empty, but Job caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

Job 29 · Grade 5

I Put On Righteousness

Name Date

Read and Think

Job begins, Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me; when his lamp shone on my head, and by his light I walked through darkness, as I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was in my tent. What Job misses most is not his wealth but closeness with God.

Job remembers his honor at the city gate. The young men saw me and hid themselves. The aged rose up and stood. The princes refrained from talking. Men listened to me, waited, and kept silence for my counsel. They waited for me as for the rain. He lived as a king in the army, as one who comforts the mourners. His leadership was marked by comfort, not cruelty.

Job's honor came from his care for others. I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had no one to help him. I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. I put on righteousness, and it clothed me. I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy. I researched the cause of him whom I didn't know. This chapter directly refutes the friends. Zophar hinted that Job oppressed the poor, and Eliphaz said Job sent widows away empty. Job's life shows the opposite.

  1. What does Job miss most?

  2. How did people at the gate respond to Job?

  3. What marked Job's leadership?

  4. What did Job do for the cause of strangers?

  5. How does this chapter refute the friends?
