The Fear of the Lord, That Is Wisdom

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 28 is a poem about wisdom. It begins with human skill: Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine. Iron is taken out of the earth. Miners cut shafts where no bird of prey has flown and no lion has walked. His eye sees every precious thing. The thing that is hidden he brings out to light. Humans can uncover the treasures of the earth.

Then the poem turns: But where will wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding? Man doesn't know its price. The deep says, It isn't in me. The sea says, It isn't with me. It can't be gotten for gold. Gold and glass can't equal it. The price of wisdom is above rubies. Even Destruction and Death have only heard a rumor of it.

God understands its way, and he knows its place. For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole sky. He establishes the force of the wind and measures out the waters. To man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding. This echoes Job 1:1, where Job feared God and turned away from evil. The poem prepares for God's speeches in chapters 38 to 41.
