Integrity Until I Die

Name Date

Job 27 · Grade 5

The Hope of the Godless

Name Date

Read and Think

Job begins with an oath: As God lives, who has taken away my right, surely my lips will not speak unrighteousness, neither will my tongue utter deceit. He still feels God has taken away his right, yet he swears by God's life, showing that he still believes in God. Far be it from me that I should justify you. Until I die I will not put away my integrity from me.

I hold fast to my righteousness, and will not let it go. My heart will not reproach me so long as I live. Job will not lie about himself to satisfy his friends. To confess false sins would be deceit, which he has just sworn not to speak.

Job then asks, For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off? Will God hear his cry when trouble comes on him? Will he delight himself in the Almighty, and call on God at all times? Job agrees that God judges the wicked: He lies down rich, but he will not do so again. Job's difference with the friends is not whether God judges evil, but whether every sufferer is wicked.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Job show he still believes in God?

  2. Why would confessing false sins be wrong?

  3. What does Job ask about the godless?

  4. What does Job say about the wicked man's riches?

  5. What is Job's real difference with the friends?
