Job answered Bildad. He said Bildad had not helped him.

Then Job talked about how great God is. God hangs the earth on nothing. God holds water in the clouds, and the clouds do not burst.

Job said all of this is just a small part of what God does. We hear only a whisper of Him. God is greater than we can understand. He is more than we can understand.

A Small Whisper

Name Date

Job answered Bildad, How have you helped him who is without power! How have you counseled him who has no wisdom! Job meant that Bildad's words had not helped him at all.

Then Job said, He stretches out the north over empty space, and hangs the earth on nothing. He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not burst under them.

Job said, Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways. How small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand? Job knew God is far greater than anyone can explain.

Job 26 · Grade 4

The Thunder of His Power

Name Date

Read and Think

Job's reply to Bildad was sharp. How have you helped him who is without power! How have you counseled him who has no wisdom! To whom have you uttered words? Job showed that a speech about God's greatness is not the same as comfort.

Then Job spoke of God's greatness even more grandly than Bildad. God stretches out the north over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. He binds up the waters in His thick clouds. He has set a boundary on the waters. The pillars of heaven tremble at His rebuke, and by His Spirit the heavens are garnished.

Job concluded, Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways. How small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand? Even all these wonders are only the edges of what God does.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Job show about Bildad's speech?

  2. What does God hang the earth on?

  3. What do the pillars of heaven do at God's rebuke?

  4. What are all these wonders, according to Job?

Job 26 · Grade 5

But a Whisper

Name Date

Read and Think

Job answers Bildad with irony: How have you helped him who is without power! How have you saved the arm that has no strength! How have you counseled him who has no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge! Job points out that the friends' lectures on God's greatness have done nothing for the weak man in front of them.

Job then outdoes Bildad in describing God's majesty. Even the realm of the dead lies open before God. He stretches out the north over empty space, and hangs the earth on nothing. He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not burst under them. He has described a boundary on the surface of the waters. He stirs up the sea with his power. By his Spirit the heavens are garnished.

Job concludes with humility: Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways. How small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand? Job agrees with the friends that God is great, but he knows even more clearly that God is beyond human understanding, which is why simple rules cannot explain his suffering.

Show What You Know

  1. What does Job point out about the friends' lectures?

  2. How does Job describe the earth?

  3. What does Job say about the heavens?

  4. How does Job conclude?

  5. Why can't simple rules explain Job's suffering?
