True Words Without Comfort

Name Date

Read and Think

Bildad's third speech is the shortest in the book. He said dominion and fear are with God, and God makes peace in His high places. He asked, Can his armies be counted? On whom does his light not arise?

These words about God's greatness are true. God rules over everything, and His light reaches everyone. But Bildad used this truth to make a hard point: How then can man be just with God? He even called man a worm.

Bildad was right that no one is perfect before God. But he left out God's care for the people He made. He also still treated Job as guilty. The friends seem to run out of words here, and Zophar does not speak a third time.

  3. What did Bildad leave out?

Job 25 · Grade 5

How Can Man Be Just with God?

Name Date

Read and Think

Bildad's final speech is only six verses long. Dominion and fear are with him. He makes peace in his high places. Can his armies be counted? On whom does his light not arise? Bildad rightly praises God's rule over heaven and earth and the reach of His light.

He then asks, How then can man be just with God? Or how can he who is born of a woman be clean? Even the moon and stars are not pure in God's sight, he says, how much less man, who is a worm. Bildad's question is a real one, and Job himself asked something similar in 9:2.

But Bildad's answer stops short. He sees God's greatness and human weakness, yet offers no hope, no mercy, and no comfort to a suffering friend. The friends' cycle of speeches ends here, with Zophar silent. In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:5 speaks of one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, the answer to how man can be just with God.

Show What You Know

  1. How long is Bildad's final speech?

  2. What does Bildad rightly praise?

  3. Where did Job ask a similar question?

  4. What does Bildad's answer leave out?

  5. How does 1 Timothy 2:5 answer Bildad's question?
